Why We Must Pass the ACE Act
Animal cruelty doesn’t stop at state lines — and neither should accountability. The ACE Act (Animal Cruelty Enforcement Act) is critical because only federal law can address the national gaps that allow cruelty to continue unchecked. Here's why:
1. Create a National System of Oversight
Right now, anyone can start a rescue or transport animals across state lines without federal oversight. The ACE Act would allow the federal government to step in and create uniform standards, finally holding shady actors accountable, no matter what state they operate in.
2. Close Loopholes Between States
Abusers can move animals (and themselves) from state to state to avoid consequences. Without a federal law, there's no way to track repeat offenders or shut them down for good. The ACE Act would close those loopholes and stop cruelty from being swept under the rug.
3. Connect Cruelty to Crime
Animal cruelty is often linked to other serious crimes like domestic violence, trafficking, and organized crime. However, most local law enforcement agencies aren’t trained or resourced to investigate these connections. The ACE Act empowers federal agencies like the DOJ and FBI to take these cases seriously and act.
4. Enforce Laws Already on the Books
Laws don’t mean much without enforcement. While the PACT Act made some forms of cruelty a federal felony, very few cases are prosecuted. The ACE Act would fund dedicated teams to investigate, build cases, and enforce the law, finally giving animals real protection, not just promises.
The bottom line: Animal cruelty is a national crisis. We need a national response. Pass the ACE Act.
